About Discount Calculator
Sales signs show a percentage, but what you really want to know is the final price and how much you save. This calculator works it out instantly from the original price and the discount, and can also tell you the discount percentage when you only know the original and sale prices.
It is useful for shoppers comparing deals and for shop owners planning promotions and checking that sale prices are calculated correctly.
When to use it
- Checking the real price during sales such as Black Friday or Eid offers.
- Comparing discounts between stores.
- Shop owners setting promotion prices.
- Finding the discount percentage on a reduced item.
Tips for better results
- Compare final prices, not percentages — 30% off a higher price may still cost more.
- Stacked discounts multiply rather than add, so 20% + 10% off equals 28% off.
- Remember to add any sales tax after the discount if the price excludes it.
How to use the Discount Calculator
- Enter the original price.
- Enter the discount percentage (or the sale price).
- See your savings and final price.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Savings = price × discount ÷ 100, and the final price = price − savings. 25% off 80 saves 20, so you pay 60.
Is 20% off twice the same as 40% off?
No. Two 20% discounts give 36% off in total (0.8 × 0.8 = 0.64), because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). For example, an item costing 80 after 20% off was originally 80 ÷ 0.8 = 100.
Is the discount applied before or after tax?
Usually before tax — tax is calculated on the discounted price. This calculator works on whatever price you enter, so enter the pre-tax price if you want to add tax afterwards.
