What is the InPage to Unicode Converter?

The InPage to Unicode converter extracts the Urdu text from InPage (.inp) files and converts text copied from InPage 2000–2009 into Unicode Urdu that works in Word, websites and phones. It runs in your browser.

InPage was the standard way to write Urdu for decades, but its files and text use InPage’s own encoding: an .inp file cannot be opened in Word, and Urdu copied out of InPage 2000–2009 turns into symbols such as ‚Ç…“ when pasted elsewhere. This tool converts both into Unicode Urdu, the standard every modern app, website and phone uses.

Drop an .inp file to extract its text, or paste text copied from InPage. The Urdu letters, اعراب, Urdu digits (put back in the right order), punctuation, honorifics such as ﷺ and ؓ, and the paragraphs are converted. Then copy the text, save it as Word or .txt, or open it in the Urdu Editor to lay it out as a book and save a PDF. The conversion runs in your browser: your files are not uploaded.

When to use it

  • Moving old InPage books, newspapers and records to Unicode so they can be searched and edited.
  • Publishing Urdu written in InPage on a website, blog or social media.
  • Opening an InPage file on a computer that does not have InPage.
  • Fixing Urdu text that pastes as symbols after copying it from InPage.

Tips for better results

  • Check numbers and brackets after converting: InPage stores some of them right to left, and the tool reverses them back.
  • Formatting, pictures and page layout are not carried over; set the font, headings and page size again in the Urdu Editor.
  • If a file cannot be read, open it in InPage, select all (Ctrl + A), copy, and paste the text into the box instead.

How to use the InPage to Unicode Converter

  1. Drop an InPage file (.inp) on the box, or paste text you copied from InPage.
  2. Check the Unicode Urdu that appears on the right.
  3. Copy it, save it as Word or .txt, or click "Open in Urdu Editor" to format it and save a PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is my InPage file uploaded?

No. The file is read and converted in your browser and never leaves your computer.

Is the formatting kept?

The text, اعراب, digits, punctuation and paragraphs are converted. Fonts, sizes, colours, pictures and page layout from InPage are not.

Which InPage versions are supported?

Files from InPage 2000, 2002 and 2009, which use InPage’s own encoding, and InPage 3 files, which store Unicode. Text copied from InPage 2000–2009 can be pasted and converted too; InPage 3 already copies Unicode, so its text needs no conversion.

Can it convert Unicode back to InPage?

Not yet. Most people move from InPage to Unicode; if you need the other direction, request it from the Tools page.
