About Character Counter

Many platforms limit text by characters rather than words — tweets and posts, SMS messages, meta descriptions, app store listings and form fields. The Character Counter shows the total with and without spaces, a breakdown by letters, digits, spaces and symbols, and progress bars for common platform limits.

Edit your text until it fits, then copy it straight to where you need it. Your text stays in your browser.

When to use it

  • Posts for X (Twitter), Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook.
  • SEO titles and meta descriptions.
  • SMS marketing and notification messages.
  • Form fields and bios with character limits.

Tips for better results

  • Put the most important words first — long text is often cut off in previews.
  • Emoji and some symbols can count as two characters on some platforms.
  • For SEO titles, aim for roughly 50–60 characters so they are not truncated in Google.

How to use the Character Counter

  1. Type or paste your text.
  2. See the total and a breakdown by letters, digits, spaces and more.
  3. Check the platform limit bars before you post.

Frequently asked questions

Do emoji count as one character?

Yes. Emoji, flags and accented letters count as one character each, the way you see them. Some platforms count certain emoji as two, so allow a little headroom.

Are line breaks counted?

Yes, each line break counts as one character in the total. The "without spaces" count excludes spaces, tabs and line breaks.

Do spaces count as characters?

Usually yes — most platforms, including X and SMS, count spaces. That is why the tool shows the count both with and without spaces.

How long can an SMS be?

A standard SMS holds 160 characters. Messages with emoji or certain special characters switch to a different encoding with a 70-character limit per message.
